## Abstract The antibiotic chlorotetracycline (CTC) is used as a fluorescent chelate probe to investigate its active transport in respiring Staphylococcus aureus cells. CTC chelation to magnesium or calcium leads to fluorescence enhancement. This enhancement is further increased when the polarity o
