Abstract
The induction of capacitation in vitro of hamster sperm was examined in the presence of rabbit tubal fluid or tubal cystic fluids of cow and rabbit. When mixed with recently‐ovulated eggs in Tyrode's solution containing rabbit tubal fluid, epididymal spermatozoa became capacitated and sperm penetration as well as the formation of pronuclei was observed in most eggs within three hours. Incubation of epididymal spermatozoa in the presence of tubal cystic fluid of rabbit or cow could induce the capacitation of hamster sperm, and sperm penetration was observed by insemination of the incubated sperm. By treatment with these fluids, especially those from rabbits and in the presence of sperm, the zona pellucida was elevated or dissolved. The factor(s) responsible for sperm capacitation and acting on the zona pellucida was relatively heat‐stable. The high incidence of polyspermy was probably due to the abnormal condition of the zona pellucida and the presence of numerous capacitated spermatozoa under the present experimental conditions.
