β¦ Synopsis
The book sets out the different forms that criminal evidence may take, separating sections on circumstantial evidence, presumptions, judicial notice, disclosed evidence and evidence adduced by questioning witnesses. The separate treatment is also given to the evidential limitations of certain categories of witnesses such as spouses, children, the mentally handicapped and accomplices.
All the major evidential subjects of identification, documents, privilege, public interest immunity, character and hearsay are written about authoritatively and in clear language which makes this book very accessible. Separate chapters are given to illegally or improperly obtained evidence and confessions. Noticeably, the last chapter 'Incrimination By Silence', is out of sequence and should be elsewhere to allow the book to end with 'Previous Judgments', so that subject groups are kept together.
