The periodic physical exam is the ideal time for the primary physician to detect cancer at an early stage. With certain points in mind the physician can rapidly screen for suggestive signs of cancer during the physical examination. Certain procedures, laboratory and x-ray examinations, aid in this detection and should be part of the total examination. Cancer 51:2446-2447, 1983. s PRIMARY care physicians, we do the majority of A periodic physical examinations that are performed in doctors' offices today. The frequency of this examination and the depth to which it is performed may vary according to our individual philosophy. Yet, at the time of this examination, having knowledge of the patient's personal and family history, being aware of what to look for and where to look, proficiency in certain specialized techniques, and being acquainted with the tests that should be employed, we can play a most important role in early cancer detection and subsequent treatment. I will confine my discussion to just the office physical exam.
