β¦ Synopsis
Why do we want to measure drug tnetabolism in man ?
The rate of drug metabolism determines plasma levels of drugs, whether ineffective, too high or in the required range. Abnormalities of drug metabolism can lead to the unexpected formation of toxic metabolites, and induction of enzyme synthesis by drugs can alter metabolic pathways and so disturb the equilibrium of the patient with his environment. All these are reasons for studying drug metabolism in an individual patient.
When we look at the broad picture of public health we find further indications for wishing to know how people handle the input of those chemicals that are not part of the normal metabolic pathways of synthesis and energy yield.
