Là, une très mauvaise surprise l’attend, surtout quand il s’aperçoit que son propre voilier a levé l’ancre. Sans radio et sans mazout, il ne peut compter que sur un miracle. Ou plutôt sur la ténacité de Rae. Mais celle-ci n’en mène pas large non plus. Charles Williams naît en 1909 au Texas. Il s’engage dans la marine marchande, puis sert dans l’armée jusqu’à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il s’installe ensuite à Los Angeles après la guerre et travaille pour Mackay Radio. Il publie son premier roman en 1951 et rencontre immédiatement le succès. Au total, il écrit vingt-deux romans, est adapté à treize reprises sur grand écran et collabore à l’écriture de plusieurs scénario. Bien-aimé du public français, il reçoit le Grand Prix de Littérature policière en 1956. Il se suicide en 1975 dans son appartement de Los Angeles.
