Increasing global demand for high-speed internet access has been a major driving force in current efforts towards rapid deployment of low earth orbit satellites for worldwide communication. Because of the need to track the satellites, low cost phased array antenna systems are in increasing demand for applications in individual homes and businesses. Recent advances in low loss ferroelectric thin film materials have brought about a resurging promise of low cost phased arrays. This special issue is devoted exclusively to the low cost aspect of the phased array antenna design for applications in the rapidly emerging commercial market.
