Call for Papers Bullying in Adult Life
SPECIAL ISSUE edited by PROFESSOR JIM ORFORD and DR JOHN BEASLEY It is clear that bullying is common in adult life as well as in childhood, occurring particularly in any situation where there is a potential opportunity for the misuse of power by one person over another. Bullying may take the form of open harassment or of intimidation, or of outright physical abuse but it is often characterised by more subtle, persistent 'thieving of self-esteem'. It is frequent in workplace situations especially where discipline is part of the job, and in the relationships between warders and prisoners and trainers and trainees, but it also occurs between therapists and clients and may be evoked by the frailty of age or the vulnerability of disablement.
The purpose of this Special Issue is to raise awareness and to provide information by bringing together contributions from those who have studied bullying in adult life in different situations. Papers reporting research into the nature of bullying, its origins and extent will be welcome, as will studies of the effects on individuals and organisations. Other areas of interest are: the factors and tenets within organisations which appear to favour bullying and those which seem to reduce its frequency; the underlying cultural features within society which affect its prevalence; actual or proposed policies and measures designed to uncover the presence of bullying, to reduce its extent or to assist the victim, the bullies and the organisations within which it is occurring; other factors which are known to be relevant, for example, the incidence of bullying after organisational change or the advent of new members of staff; the importance of bullies as role models; the collection of groups of cronies by bullies-bullying by proxy.
