✦ Synopsis
August 17-22, 1987, University of Antwerp, Belgium
Topics
A diverse group of prominent scholars will be asked to represent their specific fields of research, and sessions will be organized around the themes of their talks. A full list of these keynote speakers will be included in the second circular.
One session will be devoted to a discussion and evaluation of the work done by that time in preparation of the Association's Handbook.
No restrictions are imposed on the diversity of pragmatically relevant issues to be dealt with at the conference.
In addition to the general program, the organizers have selected a topic for special attention: problems of intercultural and international communication. Within the scope of this special topic, the following sessions will be organized:
(1) "Interethnic conversation" (coordinator: John Gumperz, Berkeley), ( 2) "Ethnic styles of communications" (coordinator: Thomas Kochman, Chicago). (3) "Crosscultural language socialization" (coordinator: Elinor Ochs. Los Angeles), ( 4) "Crosscultural perspectives on communicative strategies in institutional settings" (coordinators: Donald Brenneis, Claremont and Susan Philips, Tucson), ( 5) "Crosscultural differences in the conceptualization of verbal communication" (coordinator: Jef Verscheuren, Antwerp), ( 6) "Intercultural and international communication through new technologies" (coordinator: Alessandro Duranti, Claremont/Rome), ( 7) "Verbal and non-verbal communication in a crosscultural perspective" (coordinators: Charles Goodwin and Marjorie Goodwin, Columbia), (8) "Crosscultural differences in sign language" (coordinator: Virginia Volterra, Rome).
