β¦ Synopsis
The cyber-attack exposed security lapses in two Web servers at the California Independent System Operator (Cal-ISO), a nonprofit corporation that controls the distribution of 75% of the State's power.
The incident, which took place between 25 April and 11 May, allowed the malicious users to get close to disrupting the flow of power in California during the rolling blackouts.
In addition to connecting the agency's Solaris server systems directly to the Internet, the Cal-ISO system administrators left the servers with all the software installed with the default setup, which left many vulnerabilities open to exploitation.
