โฆ Synopsis
On January 14ยฑ16, 1999, the California Department of Health Services sponsored an invitational workshop aimed at elucidating the key controversies in the epidemiology which deals with Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMFs). Since the department was committed to doing its own risk evaluation at a later date, it was felt that commissioning papers reviewing the evidence for certain diseases, and other papers on crucial methodological issues would be helpful for the ultimate risk evaluation. Stimulating a debate on how conยฎdent (if at all) one should be of a causal effect of EMFs on adult and childhood brain cancer would pinpoint factual and inferential issues which would require treatment during the Department's risk evaluation process. We purposely invited participants with a wide range of opinions on this issue to assure a vigorous discussion. The program of the workshop is in Table 1. The participants and their afยฎliations are listed in Table 2. A small number of observers was also invited.
With one exception this special supplement to Bioelectromagnetics contains the full text of the papers presented, though a number have been revised or updated. This supplement also summarizes the workshop ร 2001Wiley-Liss, Inc.
