โœฆ Synopsis

In the phenotyping of blood specimens from 16,637 human subjects, there were 330 (2%) rare and unusual Gc variants observed by conventional electrophoresis. One unusual Gc variant was found in the blood of a male residing in Mexico City. Fortunately, we were ablc to sccurc blood samples from 16 individuals in three generations of this donor's family. The 4-banded Gc pattern appeared for eight of these family members, including the donor's father, five siblings, and one son. We named this pattern Gc Mexico. Subsequent analysis by Dr. J. Constans of Toulouse, France, employing isoelectric focusing, identified the pattern as a Gc 1C13 which had just recently been identified in a Danish population. This paper will discuss the identification of the variant pattern and some points to be considcrcd whcn trying to name a newlydiscovered phenotype.
