## Abstract A systematic method is established for computing the coupling coefficients associated with arbitrary compact groups using only the general properties of the coefficients and the specific character theory of the relevant groups. The basic character theory is first outlined. Then a primit

β¦ Synopsis
To obtain explicit algebraic formulas for calculating 3n-j symbols, a new algebraic method due to Labarthe shows great promise. The method is based on Bargmann's treatment of the rotation group, and Jucys' analysis of vector coupling graphs. In this article we present an overview of Labarthe's algebraic scheme, and use it to derive the well-known formulas for the 3-j and 6-j symbols. These derivations are much shorter and more lucid than the classical derivations by Wigner and Racah.
