โœฆ Synopsis

reaction of hydroxyl groups formed in consequence of the oxidation. Such a suggestion is supported by the study on oxidation of coals with labelled oxygen4 from which it is evident that, during a pyrolysis of oxidized coal, an essential part of the labelled oxygen appears in the 'low-temperature tar plus water' fraction. It is also suggested that changes in molecular weights of low-temperature tar depend, to some extent, on coal rank. The results summarized in Table indicate that molecular weights increase with coal rank.

Three infrared (Lr.) methods for the quantitative determination of some inorganic compounds in coal and coal ash are evaluated. Attention is focussed on calcium compounds occurring in ash from an atmospheric fluid-bed boiler. The i.r. measuring range was extended to 200 cm-' where scattering was les
