mechanism which couples the specific receptor binding w i t h the cellular response, and the roles and sequence of these observed intracellular phenomena, have not been clearly delineated. One hypothesis being tested in a number of different cells i s that upon recognition of a stimulus, a phospholipase C i s activated which cleaves the inositol phosphate(s) portion from phosphatidyl inositols yielding diacylglycerol, which i s reported to activate protein kinase C (Kishimoto et al., 19801, and inositol phosphates, which have been shown to effec-
