✦ Synopsis
Enough has been learned about the peculiar arthropathy associated with calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition over the past decade to justify holding a symposium. Reasonable data relating to the prevalence of the condition and to its multifaceted clinical presentations, radiologic appearance, pathology, triggering mechanisms for the acute attacks, mechanisms of induction of joint inflammation, and genetics are presented in this symposium. But, as with most diseases, we are still blind men palpating the e!ephant. This article is intended to be a status report. An approximate description of the shape and size of the b e m is presented here, together with speculation as to its genesis and thoughts regarding the directions of, need for, and possible significance of further palpation by scientists and clinicians.
