When milled together with calcite or fluorite, malononitrile and methyl cyanoacetate readily underwent Kno ¨venagel condensation with aromatic aldehydes, giving the corresponding arylidenemalononitriles and (E)-a-cyanocinnamic esters in good to excellent yield.
