Abstract

Two caffeic acid glycoside esters, verbascoside and arenarioside, were isolated from “hedgehyssop” Gratiola officinalis L. Their structures were determined by several one‐and twodimensional NMR experiments. After hydrolysis with 2 N hydrochloric acid and 4% sodium hydroxide solution the components were identified by GC. The absolute configuration of the monosaccharides was determined by GC separation of the diastereomers which were obtained by glycosidation with (S)‐(+)‐2‐butanol. An equilibrium between Z and E isomers was observed.
