Two novel octulosonic acid derivatives with a 6,8-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octane skeleton that are major water-soluble phenolic compounds were found in the roots of Smallanthus sonchifolius. The structures of these compounds were determined to be (1R,2S,3S,4R,5S,7R)-4-hydroxy-7-hydroxymethyl-3-[3-(3,4-di
