MOCIE said a total of W330bn ($277.5bn) would be injected into the national solarpowered generator distribution project, with by 2010 a W12bn development technology and a W210bn distribution fund. The ministry would invest W7.3bn by 2004 developing 3 kW homeuse solar-powered generators, increasing system efficiency by more than 80%, while pouring W16bn into next-generation thin-film type solar cells to reduce production costs.
The government will also increase the number of model solar energy-powered 'Green Villages' from two to five by the end of 2003. It will also designate a Solar City to distribute the self-solar power generators. A solar-ray research complex will also be established to test the newly developed solar energy generators. MOCIE hopes combined solar power generation increases from current 4,943 kW to 90,000 kW by 2010.
US special project grants
The US Department of Energy (DOE) will provide $12.6m to 47 states and three territories for 138 energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. DOE is providing the funding through its State Energy Program Special Projects competitive grants.
States, territories and the District of Columbia competed for the awards for specialised funding additional to 'formula' grants given to each state. (South Dakota, Oklahoma and the Northern Mariana Islands did not submit applications.
