β¦ Synopsis
The dose-effect relationship between cadmium exposure and blood pressure was reviewed citing 67 references. Results indicated that prolonged administration of a low cadmium dose may elevate blood pressure slightly, whereas a higher dose may depress blood pressure, but only in hypertensive humans and animals. Cadmium tends not to change the blood pressure of normotensive humans or animals. These conclusions suggest that cadmium affects only hypertensive cadmium workers. The general public exposed to cadmium at lower dose levels should be advised to restrict cholesterol intake to avoid the risk of hypertension through cadmium-accelerated atherosclerosis.
