โœฆ Synopsis

This paper presents a case study describing how a CAD system is used by a consultancy firm specializing in catering companies' requirements. The firm is an award winner and its success is, in part, explained by the way that it has integrated a CAD system with other computer packages. The way in which the CAD system is used is described as are the advantages that it brings to the firm's operations.

integrated computer systems system, computer-aided retrieval, CAD facility

The overall winner of the Office Automation Award for 1985 was a computer installation operational at GWP Associates of Chatham, a specialist consultancy serving the organizational requirements of food and catering divisions of restaurants, hotels and institutions throughout UK and Europe. The hardware and software were supplied by Imtec UK PIc. The Award was sponsored by the Institute of Administrative Management and sought to identify achievements in UK office automation developments. Five categories were awarded and the overall winner showed qualities common to all the award classes, being selected initially as a large scale user, (that is, it used over 11 terminals and made visible use of 'automation in pursuit of corporate strategy'). Significantly the company that carried both the overall award and gained the classification as a user of 'a large scale system user' runs a staff of just 33.

Two facets emerge from this award. Firstly the great importance played by the company's CAD department which acts as an essential component of an overall integrated system. This CAD facility is linked to virtually every major phase of company administration. Secondly the importance of the CAD department in both preparing and completing client projects and also contributing to the decision-making processes that help a client to determine the most appropriate solution for a kitchen or catering facility. To appreciate the system fully it is necessary to explain the nature of GWP's services.
