✦ Synopsis

The dissociation of C6u to Css has been observed on surfaces of silica and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite by modulated molecular beam reaction spectroscopy. At 1200 K on both surfaces approximately 5% of the incident Cm dissociates and desorbs as Css. The activation energy for Css production from Csc, on the surface ( z 2.5 eV) is considerably smaller than that required in the gas phase, possibly due to the stabilization of the C, or Cs products on the surface. At surface temperatures between 1000 and 1200 K, carbon was detected on the SiOs surface.
