✦ Synopsis

German-based Burgmann Industries GmbH has been awarded a contract to produce and test seals for the world's largest water injection pump, to be used on a large oil rig in the Caspian Sea, as part of a major project from the Azerbaijan International Oil Company (AIOC). The pumps have a rating of 27 MW, and are being built by Sulzer Pumps in Leeds, UK. The pump will be used to assist oil production in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea.

Once the design of the SH-D double highpressure seal was complete and production was under way, discussions were held with the Swiss pump manufacturer Sulzer to define the exact acceptance test which would simulate practical operating conditions as closely as possible.

To this end, the original buffer fluid circuit in the supply system was installed in the Burgmann R&D center for the test. The buffer fluid is a mixture of water (70%) and glycol (30%). This mixture is being used successfully in a number of applications in Norway. Sand and salt were added
