โฆ Synopsis
Bubble growth measurements have been made in uniformly superheated water at pressures from 0.5 to I*2 atm which supplement the data of Dergarabedian and of Hooper and Abdelmessih, both of whom worked at 1 atm. Superheats in the former study ranged from 1 to 53ยฐC and from 6.9 to 39ยฐC in the latter which compares to superheats of 10 to 36ยฐC in this investigation. The data in the asymptotic phase of spherical growth show good agreement with the theory of Plesset and Zwick. Over the complete growth an extended theory (which includes a pressure driven growth term for the early stages) is found to be in good agreement with the data.
Vapour slug growth, that is when spherical vapour bubbles elongate due to the restraining walls of the apparatus, has also been investigated. The rate of growth of these slugs is greatly increased by a thin film of evaporating superheated liquid left on the walls of the apparatus.
