## Abstract **BACKGROUND:** The high crystallinity of cellulose underlies the recalcitrance that this polymer presents in enzymatic degradation. Thus, a pre‐treatment step is applied in most bioconversion processes. Treatments with ionic liquids are considered an emerging pre‐treatment technology,
