Abstract
Elastic moduli of LiNiPO~4~ linear magnetoelectric single crystal were determined using Brillouin light scattering measurements at room temperature. The obtained values of the elastic moduli are the following: c ~11~ = 189.6 ± 0.2, c ~22~ = 192.6 ± 0.4, c ~33~ = 229.6 ± 0.2, c ~44~ = 58.9 ± 0.5, c ~55~ = 70.4 ± 0.6, c ~66~ = 75.7 ± 0.5, c ~12~ = 71.4 ± 0.9, c ~13~ = 71.0 ± 0.8, and c ~23~ = 54.5 ± 0.9 in units of 10^10^ dyn/cm^2^. Determination of refractive indices at a He–Ne laser wavelength of 632.8 nm was also carried out by means of measurements of Brewster angle, and the following values were obtained: n~a~ = 1.713 ± 0.003, n~b~ = 1.698 ± 0.005, and n~c~ = 1.709 ± 0.006. The estimation of the crystal Debye temperature θ ~D~ = 645 K was made using elastic constant values. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
