✦ Synopsis

BrilIouin light ScJttering from lhe orthorhombic single cryslal sym-trichloroberuene has been measured at room temperature. Sound velocities for the longitudinal waves, experimentally independent of the magnitude of the wave vector, are given for the three principal directions in Ihe crystal. The elastic consrants Cii, with i= 1, 2 and 3, are derived. Brillouin scattering of light [I ] is a probe of the acoustic frequencies and velocities of a sample. Bnllouin scattering from benzene single crystals at 0Β°C has been obtamcd for the three princtpal directions in the crystal. The elastic constants Cii (i = 1, 2, 3) we obtained are in good agreement with the results of ultrasonic pulse experiments.
