✦ Synopsis
A simplified method is developed to derive the modifications induced at successive times by the passage of a shock wave in a standard unperturbed transition region atmosphere. Time dependent 'shocked' models allow the evaluation of the effects of the vertically propagating shock wave upon the intensity of ultraviolet lines. Out of equilibrium effects are taken into account to evaluate time varying ion abundances. The behavior of the modified UV intensities is compared with the experimental results of Vernazza et al. (1975).
