✦ Synopsis

Although this book is several years old and much new has undoubtedly been published in this fast-moving field, we note it here because we found so much interesting material which supplements, in a way, the volume "Communications of Liver Cells" reviewed in Hepatology 1981; 1:677.

Sixty-seven papers comprise the book, many also published in the Journal of Supramolecular Structure-a journal I suspect few hepatologists study regularly. Almost all of the papers have an introduction which clearly explains how the work fits in the large context-so often absent in highly technical papers.

As the title suggests, the work reported relates to how hormones, growth factors, and toxic proteins transmit signals from the cell surface to its interior. This involves much discussion of cell membranes, their structure, and function. I found it fascinating.
