β¦ Synopsis
In "Breast Cancer: The Facts," Michael Baum has taken a subject which is often bewilderingly complex to most laypersonsand even some physicians -and presented the "state of the art" in a clearly understandable text. He neither talks down to nor up to his audience, and delivers the material in a clear, concise, and complete manner.
Although this is a relatively short book (just over 100 pages), it provides the reader with a comprehensive picture of the history, risk factors, screening, diagnosis, primary and secondary treatments, and palliative and terminal care of breast cancer. The author is also attentive to the psychosocial aspects of breast cancer. There is an excellent chapter on the role of the nurse-counselor dealing with the patients and families affected by this "family disease". It is written by Sylvia Denton, who is herself a nursecounselor. A thorough description of the functions of that position at Kings College Medical Hospital vis-a-vis breast cancer is outlined.
