✦ Synopsis
A variety of experiments are discussed where, at low temperatures, it appears that the noninteracting picture of electrons in a Fermi liquid description of a mesoscopic sample is breaking down. Specifically, experiments on the temperature dependence of the phase-coherence time, energy relaxation rate, spin-flip scattering time, persistent currents in normal metals and transmission through a barrier in the fractional quantum Hall regime all display lowtemperature properties which can not be accounted for in the independent electron picture.
