✦ Synopsis

The structure of poly(fl-alanines) prepared by hydrogen transfer polymerization of acrylamide in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, has been investigated by end-group analysis and gas-chromatographic separation of hydrolysis products. Evidence is given that ,6',ff-iminodipropionic acid residues are present in the polymer chains as branching units, their proportion being greater in oligomers at the early stage of polymerization and decreasing with the stepwise growth of the polymer A mechanism is proposed for the formation and elimination of these branching units.
