โœฆ Synopsis

From author's preface:

"The computer has become an indispensable tool that is used to perform the calculations in. volved in statistical and operational research techniques. I n fact, today, most real data analysis is carried out by using the computer. Yet, in spite of this, most basic statistics and operations research textbooks do not emphasize the use of computer packages. While some of these texts do display computer output, few attempt to truly integrate the use of the computer into the quantitative material being presented."

Thus this book intends t o fill the gap noticed before. The statistical topics are Chapter 1 : Descriptive statistics, Chi-square test for independence and testa for equality of two

Chapter 2: Simple and multiple regression analysis Chapter 3: Elementary time series analyais and forecasting.

The statistical methods are explained, organized in an algorithmic manner and then confronted t o the instructions of the computer package SAS (Statistical Analysis System) (in Chapter 3 the module DECOMP is used in addition, a listing of DECOMP is given in the appendix).

Chapter 4 gives a n introduction to linear programming using the package LINDO (created by Dr. SCHEAQE of the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago).

LINDO means "Linear Interactive and Discrete Optimizer".

All the introduced methods are demonstrated in examples of practice, using concrete real data and interpreting the results which are given as computer outputs.

Summarizing this book can be well recommended to lectures in statistics and/or operations research a8 a support in teaching as well as to students of this area.
