✦ Synopsis
The seismic response of concrete gravity dams taking into account dynamic dam-water-foundation interaction is studied using the Boundary Element Method (BEM). Only the formulation and the solution procedure are described in this paper (part I). The analysis is carried out in the frequency domain, the problem is reduced to one in two dimensions and linear behaviour for the concrete, foundation and water is assumed. The BEM permits a good representation of the coupled system consisting of the dam, the water and the soil and its use for cases with complicated topography or with underground inhomogeneities does not present particular difficulty. Numerical results and comparison studies are presented in a companion paper (part II).
