The year is 2145, and humans are starving. The world's livestock industry has been decimated, and governments begin to fall when they can no longer provide for their citizens. Amidst the turmoil, the wealthiest people around the globe form a new empire called The Power Elite and create a new source of food called "nutrimen", a species derived from the DNA of the only remaining mammals β humans. To prevent rebellion, the nutrimen are raised to be mute and have never heard a human voice.
When a teenager named Calla Wilkinson is transferred to work in the kennels where the nutrimen are penned, she is immediately captivated by one of the younger females she names April. Over a period of a few months a strong bond is formed between the two, and Calla can't accept the fact that April will soon be harvested to feed her and the other members of the Elite. In an attempt to save the young nutrimen, she jeopardizes herself and her family by disobeying the rules and ultimately has to decide if she should attempt to change a society that will do whatever it takes to survive, or conform to the new social order and accept that April's fate has been predetermined?
We are also introduced to a myriad of characters who have somehow managed to survive outside of the utopian lifestyle of the Power Elite.
In a world where one must eat or be eaten, will the friendship of two young girls hold the answer to preventing the extinction of the human race?
