Institute of Control Sciences, was one of the greatest Soviet scholars in control theory. He made an outstanding contribution to theories of invariancy, nonlinear systems, systems with variable structure, terminal and self-tuning systems. B. N. Petrov paid much attention to informational approach in control theory, use of computers for research and design and to developing theory and application of automatic control in aerospace technology. He was the leader of Soviet space projects. B. N. Petrov authored eight books and over 200 papers. A talented teacher, he headed a department at the Moscow Aviation Institute and founded a scientific school of his followers.
