✦ Synopsis

General Anatomy and Musculoskeletal System is the first atlas in the Thieme Atlas of Anatomy series. Additional subject atlases are planned for future publication. The General Anatomy and Musculoskeletal System Atlas is a masterful endeavor incorporating a new approach to the study of gross anatomy. It is well organized, easy to follow, and has a smooth flow to the understanding of anatomy. With superbly illustrated images, the Thieme Atlas features extensive coverage of the general anatomy and the anatomy of the musculoskeletal system. Throughout the atlas are clinical applications which emphasize the relevance of the anatomical concept presented to the practice of medicine. Included are images depicting cross-sectional anatomy, X-rays, CT, and MRI scans.

The General Anatomy and Musculoskeletal System Atlas is comprised of two primary sections. General Anatomy is a comprehensive study to the introduction of human anatomy. It features overviews of the general organization of the body. Clearly labeled images and explanative text demonstrate the topographical, system by system, and schematic views of the embryology, surface anatomy, bones, joints, muscles and vessels, and general neuroanatomy of the body in a generalized perception, which is both informative and easy to understand.

The Musculoskeletal System is a detailed atlas of the musculoskeletal system. It is divided into three components, the trunk, the upper extremity, and the lower extremity. Each component is further classified as to (1) bones and ligaments, (2) musculature, both functional and topographical, and (3) neurovascular. Newly created illustrations and tables present a comprehensive study of the musculoskeletal system. The associated text is clear and descriptive. Specific topics are presented in two page self contained spreads, which utilize schematics, illustrations, tables, and clinical content to facilitate the understanding of the anatomy.

As stated in the preface, The Thieme Atlas of Anatomy is a comprehensive educational tool that combines illustrations with explanatory text and summarizing tables. . . . presenting anatomical concepts in a step by step
