BOOK REVIEWS
consumers' behaviour and changes in social values are addressed.
Trading with the Environment is a thorough and good debate on the topic of Trading Regulations in the environment. But as a book on the entire topic of trade and the environment, it underestimates the potential voluntary trade initiatives such as the newly formed Forest Stewardship Council. The Forest Stewardship Council provides independent certificates that timber comes from well-managed forests. It underestimates the power of the consumer and environmental scrutiny by large purchasing companies. This is generated by the rise in expectations of various stockholders such as the consumer, media, shareholders and employees for large organizations to be more responsible for what they buy. In my view, here the real solutions lie. Continuous improvements can be demanded using the cheque book to influence. Although it touches on these points in its 16 closing recommendations, they do not receive a sufficient hearing in the body of the book.
