This book is one in a series which seek to provide rigorous, focused discussions in current international debates on tourism. Unfortunately, whilst not without value, this book does not really live up to that claim. Given the complexity of the subject it was perhaps optimistic to achieve that objective in what is, after all, a fairly small-scale publication. A lesser review of impacts, already well documented, and a greater emphasis on what sustainability can mean in terms of practical action 'on the ground' would have been more effective in meeting the expectations raised by the title.

There is a superficial feel to the book. There is also a lack of smooth flow. It does seem very much a review of reviews and, as such, lacks a practitioner's reality. It also lacks some significant references and would have benefitted from a little more historical detail. Although sustainability may be a relatively new concept, the tourism-environment issue has a long history.

The review of impacts and problems is comprehensive as is the chapter on environmental impact assessment (EIA). However it is the concentration on EIA, with the additional emphasis on the concept in the Conclusions chapter, which is paradoxically the weakest aspect of the book in answering the question of the book's title.

The authors stress the processes and difficulties of EIA and admit that EIA and land-use planning is the focus of the book. It seems odd then that they also
