✦ Synopsis

circuit television. A review of the physical principles of these sensors is also presented. The relative new field of biometrics is also covered; this is the use of a unique physiological or behavioural characteristic to identify or verify an individual. Examples include fingerprints, iris scans, facial recognition, and speech recognition.

The final two chapters of the book look into maintenance and facility management and also overall system topologies. Predictive maintenance is covered, whereby periodic monitoring and analysis of equipment is undertaken in order to predict future performance. There is also mention of worldwide facility management with respect to modern organisations that require frequent and dynamic reconfiguration, say because of desk sharing or similar.

Overall, this is a well-coordinated book with many practical examples being given. A list of abbreviations is given at the end, which you can always refer to if you get lost in the jargon. It will appeal to a wider readership and is generally a fascinating review of current and future developments taking place within the building industry.
