✦ Synopsis
This interdisciplinary book is essentially a prolonged meditation upon what Richard
Wilkinson regards as one of the most powerful in¯uences on the health of whole populations in the developed world to have come to light' (p. 4): a strong international relationship between income distribution and national mortality rates. In the developed world, it is not the richest countries which have the best health, but the most egalitarian' (p. 3).
Because of the profound importance of the issues raised by this book, both in themselves and to the theme of this Special Issue in particular, nine reviews of this book have been commissioned from diering intra-and interdisciplinary perspectives and are published here simultaneously.
