The chart of the little rockets elicits Tufte's familiar plea (elaborated in his earlier books) to eliminate chartjunk, needless artwork and detail, and codes and symbols which require the reader to decipher hidden messages. Furthermore, for Tufte, excellence in the design of displays is more than how to plot the datait is also about the weight of the lines, the space between graphic elements, the choice of typeface etc. His books are intended to lead by example, as he carefully controls all aspects of the publishing, even down to the choice of paper stock. As with his other books, this is a beautiful volume to read and own.
Those encountering Tufte's work for the first time, especially those working with numerical data, would probably best begin with his first book, ¹he »isual Display of Quantitative Information. Those familiar with his previous books will still enjoy the wonderful way »isual Explanations finds new examples in unexpected places, such as 18th century architectural drawings, and diagrams illustrating magic tricks.
