✦ Synopsis
As a polymer scientist, I Ðnd this book is a welcome addition to the, now ageing, more comprehensive works on polyurethanes. It is not a treatise on these polymers, but is a comprehensive, authoritative and scholarly work on the very fruitful organic chemistry of the isocyanate group.
The Ðrst 313 pages cover, in splendid detail, the synthesis, chemistry and uses of mono-isocyanates, sub-divided into chapters on alkyl and aryl isocyanates, unsaturated isocyanates, halogenated alkyl and aryl isocyanates, carbonyl, thiocarbonyl and imidoyl isocyanates, sulphur isocyanates, phosphorus isocyanates, inorganic isocyanates and applications of mono-isocyanates. The second section, 152 pages and 661 references, deals with diisocyanates, sub-divided into sections on aliphatic and aromatic diisocyanates, and further divided into sections on synthesis, manufacture, reactions, and applications.
The Ðnal section is a short account, 13 pages, of environmental considerations, with emphasis on toxicity, environmental impacts in terms of disposal of by-products of isocyanate manufacture, disposal of isocyanate-derived products and the replacement of CFCs in cellular products. Isocyanates from renewable resources are also mentioned.
Very few points of criticism come to mind on reading this book. I would have liked to have found more kinetic data : the index is not as comprehensive as the work itself, which will be of great interest not only to organic chemists, but also to industrial chemists and to polymer scientists. It should Ðnd its way onto many shelves. It has been a pleasure to review it.
