โœฆ Synopsis

With the continuing changes in the British health service, regular updates on policy and strategy are useful for students of the British system. Levitt and colleagues have improved on their earlier four editions and rewritten the fifth edition of their widely used book. Of particular interest are the chapters explaining the roles and functions of purchasers and providers, the renewed focus on patients, updated discussions on the role of professions such as doctors, nurses and other staff and the growing attention being paid to the involvement of users and communities. The importance of the lessons to be learned from the British reforms are gauged against an international context in the penultimate chapter, and some reflections of the future are offered at the end. This is a very readable book, and an essential start for anyone wanting to understand the British system, and for those who want to jog their memory on key policy shifts.
