Plant shut down after fire
M otiva Enterprises has reported, in a filing with state regulators, that it shut down its plant in Port Arthur, Texas, USA, after a fire early on 9 March 2010, which released an estimated 565 pounds of sulphur dioxide.
The filing went on-line about 5:30 p.m., according to a time stamp. An estimated 28 pounds of the sulphur dioxide was directly released to the atmosphere; another 537 was sent to a flare, reported the company, in the filing.
The unit was identified as a hydrogen stripper in a lube catalytic de-waxing unit. According to the filing, a pump seal failed which resulted in a fire in the unit. It is unknown how it will affect operations at the refinery.
