โœฆ Synopsis

Phoenix City detective Jackie Swann and police officer Dallas Reid trail a notorious drug dealer whose right hand man is reputed to have occult powers capable of turning humans into mindless instruments of destruction. Reprint.

From the dust jacket

Jackie Swann, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, is a dedicated officer, unfazed by the dangers of her chosen profession. She is also a wife and a mother, immersed in the struggles between career and family life. Her latest assignment will test her marriage and risk far more than her life.

Dallas Reid, Phoenix City Police Department, is a bit of a rogue cop, accustomed to doing whatever must be done to bring criminals to justice. Drug dealers are his specialty. But he's beginning to wonder if there isn't more to life that busting bad boys.

Phoenix City, North Carolina, like many small and large cities, has a drug problem. Like many cities, it is the scene of battles between rival drug gangs. But the current spate of violence has Dallas Reid baffled.

All along the city's strip of bars and clubs, people are disappearing. Local pushers are being replaced by mindless giants who negotiate drug sales in chilling whispers. And Dal's usually reliable network of informers has dried up. there are plenty of rumors about the new gang in town, but precious few facts.

Sent in by the SBI, Jackie Swann reports that a gang of Haitians is trying to take over the drug trade throughout the state, with Phoenix City as the first step. Their tactics are psychological intimidation, physical force, and something unnatural and evilall orchestrated by a mysterious figure known only as the "boneman."

What Dallas Reid and Jackie Swann experience as they investigate the boneman will challenge everything they believe about themselves, about justice and mercy, about good and evil.

From Publishers Weekly

In her lively fourth novel (after Torments ), Cantrell again mixes crime and horror fiction to chronicle strange and frightening events in the underworld drug trade of Phoenix City, N.C. In his free time, reporter J.J. Spencer writes stories about his fictional protagonist Jehovah Jones ("God has grown tired of The Job and decided to abdicate, come down to Earth and become an adventurer"). He also worries about his hard-drinking best friend, police detective Dallas Reid, who is investigating a series of drug-related murders with State Bureau of Investigation special agent Jackie Swann, a beautiful woman disturbed by the effects her job is having on her marriage. None of them realizes that a drug lord has brought in a voodoo master to wipe out his competition and that zombies are taking over the streets. The story moves along predictable paths, but Cantrell's fast-paced style redeems a multitude of sins, not least of which is the fact that the villain's actions are inconsistent with his supposed motive. The agreeable J.J. and a pair of final twists, of which one if not both will surprise most readers, provide enough diversion for anyone not unduly bothered by loose ends and discrepancies.
