Letter to the Editor: Bone Metastases in Malignant Mesothelioma Are Not Uncommon
In a recent report by Cheng and Berkman [ 11, a case of malignant mesothelioma with bone metastasis detected by MRI is described. The authors claim that bone metastases is a rare occasion in malignant mesothelioma. At the Malmo General Hospital all cases of malignant mesothelioma, verified at full autopsy during a 10-yearperiod, in all 53 cases, have been retrieved from the files of the Department of Clinical Pathology. All cases have been reviewed. Bone metastases were found in 19 of the cases, engagement of the ribs by direct overgrowth of tumour not included. In one of the cases, a previously healthy 63-year-old female, the patient's first symptoms were skeleton pain, and a biopsy from an X-ray revealed lytical bone destruction which gave the histological diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma. Thus bone metastases in malignant mesothelioma is, according to our experience, not as uncommon as the few cases so far reported in the literature may indicate. Our figures emphasize the conclusions drawn by Cheng and Berkman that a sensitive imaging technique is also of importance in metastasis diagnosis in malignant mesothelioma.
