Harry Friedman heeft gelogen over zijn leeftijd om toegelaten te worden in de Amerikaanse Luchtmacht. Nu vliegt hij als schutter in de Maisy May, een van de vele Boeings B-17 Flying Fortress die vanuit Norfolk, Engeland, naar Duitsland vliegen om daar met precisie hun zware lading bommen te lossen. Pas na 25 vluchten mag Harry weer naar huis. Maar dat een bommenwerper ongeschonden 25 vluchten doorstaat is nog maar รฉรฉn keer gebeurd! De Duitse Luftwaffe heeft als taak om het Duitse grondgebied ten koste van alles te verdedigen. De formatie B-17โs krijgt het zwaar te verduren en vele toestellen worden neergehaald. Harry is bang dat hij niet meer thuiskomt om zijn 17e verjaardag mee te maken.
