✦ Synopsis
Studies designed to test whether haemorrhage in early pregnancy can be judged as an indicator of possible malformations in the infant have yielded contradictery results. The present paper is concerned with various methodological problems that might give rise to misinterpretations in investigations of this question. Bias can be eliminated by the technique of matched pairs. In a prospective study of 5257 cases the mothers of 68 infants with severe malformations were shown to report haemorrhage no more frequently than those of 136 matched healthy controls. Similarly the onset of bleeding was not found to occur in different weeks of gestation in the two experimetal groups.
